Celebrating International Women’s Day: Empowering Women in Science and Beyond

March 8, 2025

As we mark International Women’s Day, we honor the incredible achievements of women around the world, particularly those in science and non-traditional careers. These trailblazers not only break barriers but also inspire future generations to pursue their dreams. However, we also recognize the immense unpaid labor that underpins our societies, often performed by women, and the need to support and protect their rights.

Women in Science: Pioneers and Innovators

Women in science have made groundbreaking contributions, from Rosalind Franklin’s work on DNA to Katalin Karikó‘s nobel-prize-winning work in pioneering mRNA vaccines. Despite these achievements, women still face significant challenges in the scientific community. Only 33% of researchers globally are female, and they often encounter barriers in accessing resources and advancing their careers. Initiatives like the Marie Skłodowska-Curie Actions (MSCA) are crucial in promoting gender equality in research and innovation, supporting women through equal opportunities and work-life balance provisions.

Women in Non-Traditional Roles: Breaking Stereotypes

In fields like technology, women are challenging stereotypes and proving their capabilities. Leaders such as Reshma Saujani, founder of Girls Who Code, and Kimberly Bryant, founder of Black Girls Code, are empowering young girls to pursue careers in tech. These efforts not only enrich the tech industry with diverse perspectives but also pave the way for future generations of women in STEM.

Accelerating Action for Women’s Empowerment

The theme of International Women’s Day 2025, “Accelerate Action,” resonates deeply with our mission to empower women. By recruiting, retaining, and developing diverse talent, supporting women in leadership, and designing inclusive infrastructure, we can all work together to forge a more equitable future. Let us accelerate action to protect women’s rights, celebrate their contributions, and create a world where every woman can thrive in her chosen path.

International Women’s Day is a testament to the strength and resilience of women worldwide. As we celebrate their achievements, we must also commit to doing more to support them—whether in science, non-traditional careers, or the unseen labor that keeps our societies running. Together, we can build a brighter future where women’s contributions are valued, and their rights are protected.
